چکیده

Different measures of wind influence the ocean in different ways. In particular, the time-averaged mixed layer turbulent energy production rate is proportional to !u *", where u* is the “oceanic friction velocity” that is based on wind stress. Estimating !u *" from monthly averages of wind stress or wind speed may introduce large biases due to the day-to-day variability of the direction and magnitude of the wind. The authors create monthly climatologies of !u *" from daily wind stress measurements obtained from the Goddard Satellite-based Surface Turbulent Fluxes version 2 (GSSTF2; based on satellite microwave measurements), the Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT; based on satellite scatterometry measurements), and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis wind. The differences among zonal averages of these climatologies and of a similar climatology based on the da Silva version of the Comprehensive Ocean–Atmosphere Data Set (COADS) have a complex dependence on latitude. These differences are typically 10%–30% of the climatological values. The GSSTF2 data confirm that !u3*" is much larger than estimates from monthly averaged wind stress or wind speed, especially outside the Tropics.

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Oceanic Freshwater Budget and Transport as Derived from Satellite Radiometric Data

Blended satellite–ship evaporation and SSM/I retrieved precipitation fields are used to compute oceanic freshwater budget (FWB) and transport (FWT) over a 3-year period (1988–90). In order to validate the results, comparisons on monthly, seasonal, and multiyear average bases are performed with ECMWF analyzed field and climatology respectively. For May 1988, differences between ECMWF output and ...

Some notes on the characterization of two dimensional skew cyclic codes

‎‎A natural generalization of two dimensional cyclic code ($T{TDC}$) is two dimensional skew cyclic code‎. ‎It is well-known that there is a correspondence between two dimensional skew cyclic codes and left ideals of the quotient ring $R_n:=F[x,y;rho,theta]/_l$‎. ‎In this paper we characterize the left ideals of the ring $R_n$ with two methods and find the generator matrix for two dimensional s...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Tropical Atmospheric Variability Forced by Oceanic Internal Variability

Atmospheric general circulation model experiments are conducted to quantify the contribution of internal oceanic variability in the form of tropical instability waves (TIWs) to interannual wind and rainfall variability in the tropical Pacific. It is found that in the tropical Pacific, along the equator, and near 25°N and 25°S, TIWs force a significant increase in wind and rainfall variability f...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Lagrangian Analysis and Predictability of Coastal and Ocean Dynamics 2000

The first Lagrangian Analysis and Predictability of Coastal and Ocean Dynamics (LAPCOD) meeting took place in Ischia, Italy, 2–6 October 2000. The material presented at LAPCOD 2000 indicated both a maturing of Lagrangian-based observing systems and the development of new analysis and assimilation techniques for Lagrangian data. This summary presents a review of the state-of-the-art technology i...
